Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating after school programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality after school programs. SRO works hard to provide after school programs that help youth success in school. Amy Eich the Executive Director of Community Education Northrop attended the event. Superintendent Muñoz of Rochester Public Schools attended the event. Other local organizations also participated.

Earlier this year we took a number of youth to Valley Fair to get them excited for the new school year. As we move forward we hope to provide trips like these to balance school work and fun. Traditionally, SRO provides trips like these before the start of the year.

The Highchool Graduating Class of 2018. https://somaliarebuild.org/?p=1358 https://somaliarebuild.org/?p=1358#respond Tue, 17 Jul 2018 22:25:37 +0000 http://somaliarebuild.org/?p=1358 Somalia Rebuild Organization hosted an event to recognize the highshcool graduating class of 2018. The event was held at STEM academy on June 30th, 2018. The goal of this event was to honor those who graduated in the Somali community and to become role models for the younger generation. Over 94 students were at the event to receive certificates of appreciation.

Many members from local/state governments, universities, students, and Somali elders spoke at the event to encourage youth to consider the value of higher education.

Government officials who spoke at the event include the Mayor of Rochester, MN who also received a special certificate. At the state level we have Duane Sauke our Minnesota State Representative.

From the Universtaives we have James Ford representing the Univeristy of MN- Rochester. From Winnona State University we had Samantha Eckerson.

We also had bright students speak at the event to show what can be achieved as a student. Isse Mohamed a P.HD Research candidate at Mayo Graduate School spoke to students about pursuing your goals and never giving up. Isse Mohamed will have defend his thesis in two weeks. Munira Alimire graduated this year and earned a full ride scholarship to a higher education institution of her choice. Munira Alimire committed to Stanford University. Hawa Ali is another brilliant student who currently has a full ride scholarship at the University of MN Medical School. Each of these students talked about their journey to education.

Some of the Somali community elders spoke about key topics their children could use in their planning. A few key points were the importance of seeking out help, to always try, and to never let doubt in.

Many elders in the community spoke and the youth had the opportunity to ask questions. Educational institutions such as UMR, retired faculty from RCTC, former professors, and other community leaders spoke at the event.

Many parents, youth and students came to the event in addition to organizations such UMR, Rochester STEM academy, Rochester Math and Science, and Minnesota Representative Duane Sauke.   SRO would like to thank the Department of Education for the 21st Century Grant which will last for the next three years in partner with the Rochester Public School, Boys and Girls Club, and other organizations.

The Rochester Somali TV was there to cover the events live so they broadcast to the Somali community in Olmsted County in order to learn about 21st Century Grant.

We would like to thank Rochester Ford for contributing to Somalia Rebuild Organization through a van donation. The van will greatly assist with the transportation for low-income students to and from our after school program. In addition it will be used to transport youth when traveling for sports tournaments.

General Manager of Rochester Ford. Somalia Rebuild Organization would like to endorse Ford as a valuable partner when it comes to the transpiration needs of the Somali community.

The purpose of this meeting was to meet our State and federal elected officials. We had a discussion about issues pertaining to the community. Such issues included Healthcare, Muslim ban, and immigration. We had the opportunity to meet Senator David H. Senjem, Senator Carla J. Nelson, Representative Duane Sauke and three Representatives for Senator Amy Klobuchar, Senator Al Franken and Congressman Tim Walz .

The event was held on March 18th, 2017 at Rochester Stem Academy.

The event was focused on the collective partnerships between Rochester Public Schools, United Way of Olmsted County, the individual school site, and other community resources. The Mayor was also present at this community event.

I had the opportunity to speak with Superintendent Michael Munoz on how to better serve and benefit the Somali students through the
Rochester Full Service Community.
